It's been a rainy few days in New Orleans - a reminder to consult the New Orleans auto care pros at Twin Tire to make sure your car is ready for the wet weather ahead.
Tropical Storm Cindy left a lot of rain in her wake. So much rain that New Orleans was under a flash flood watch for awhile. Cindy and the rain she left behind are reminders that we're in hurricane season and that means storms and more wet weather ahead.
That also means drivers need to be careful when negotiating wet roads. And the first safety tip, according to Edmunds.com, is to make sure your car is rain-ready. Tires are an important part of rain-readiness. Edmunds says:
"Tire tread is key, says Bill Van Tassel, Ph.D., manager of driver training programs for the AAA national office in Orlando, Florida. Dig out a quarter (forget the old advice about Lincoln's head on a penny, as some researchers have found the quarter test more accurate). Insert it upside down into your tire tread.
"'If part of Washington's head is always covered by the tread, your tires have more than 4/32 of an inch of tread remaining. If the top of Washington's head is exposed at any point, you should replace the tires.'
"According to [the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration], tires with 2/32 of an inch of tread are unsafe. However, you may want to replace tires before they get this worn, depending on driving conditions."
It's not just tire tread you should check, Edmunds says. You should also make sure your tires are at the right pressure and that your windshield wipers, headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals are all working properly.
