It’s easy to be smug at this time of year when you watch the national weather. There’s the northeast and the Midwest buried under piles of snow. Oh, sure, it’s great for skiing, sledding and ice skating, but we can easily go there for a weekend of snowy fun and then return to the Metairie-New Orleans area where, on chilly day, we might have to put on a sweater.
But we can also forget that, balmy though our temperatures might be to those in the frozen north, temperatures are cooler than they are in the summer. And that temperature drop can affect our cars and trucks. Especially our tires. When the air temperature cools, the air in our tires also cools and contracts. That can leave tires underinflated. The Connecticut Department of Transportation warns us to “keep in mind that every time the outside temperature drops 10 degrees, the tire air pressure goes down about one pound per square inch. Remember too that underinflated tires are the major cause of tire failure.”
Now you may be sitting there, thinking, “Meh, my tires look fine.” But that’s the really tricky part – you may not be able to see the underinflation. Just ask the Rubber Manufacturers Association: “A tire can lose up to half of its inflation pressure and not appear to be flat.”
And, the association echoes the Connecticut DOT about the dangers of underinflated tires: “Underinflation results in unnecessary tire stress, irregular wear, loss of control and accidents.”
The best way to tell if your tires are underinflated is to come into one of Twin Tire and Auto Care’s three locations (Harvey, Marrero, or Hammond) to let our tire care experts have a look. We’ll also check the tire wear to help you avoid any major problems down the road. And, if you need new tires, we can help with that – we stock all brands, sizes and styles of tire.
If you do happen to need new tires, you might think that’s a bad thing. But it actually could be pretty good. Buy a set of four (4) eligible General brand tires and we’ll enter you 100 times into General’s 2015 Garage Dream Giveaway. General Tire has partnered with Dream Giveaway to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the company by giving consumers who qualify the chance to win a dream garage consisting of: a custom built Ford F-150 Raptor, a 2015 Harley Davidson, a custom IRONHORSE motorcycle trailer, a 500 piece Carlyle tool set and $30,000 for taxes.
