Though air pollution continues to be a threat to public health, it appears to be even more so to the health of our children.
According to the American Lung Association’s State of the Air report for 2012, “Children’s lungs are still developing until they reach maturity” and, therefore, are potentially more susceptible to the ill effects of pollution than that of adults (http://www.stateoftheair.org/2012/key-findings/2008-2010/people-at-risk.html).
The news, though, is not all bad. While we can use air filters for homes to protect our offspring, many motorists may not be aware that most vehicles 1995 and newer are equipped with cabin air filters that are specifically designed to clean the air inside the car while you drive.

Pollutants such as fine dust, diesel soot and nitrogen oxides, and pollen and bacteria, enter the vehicle through the vents. Children are more vulnerable to these pollutants in the air because their immune systems are not developed enough to resist these toxins.
Purolator offers two types of BreatheEasy® cabin air filters – the standard particulate filter that traps all types of airborne particles, and an upgraded filter that also removes unpleasant odors.
The standard BreatheEasy filter features a scientifically engineered media formed into a multi-layer design with pleats. This provides more surface area to filter out contaminants. These filters are ‘electrostatically charged’ to ensure that even minute particulate matter gets trapped in the filter media.
The upgraded BreatheEasy cabin air filter adds an activated charcoal filter layer that captures and holds most toxic and foul-smelling gases, such as ozone, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and pollutants such as hydrocarbons.
Normally located in the cabin air intake, under the dash or behind the glove box, cabin air filters can be easy to replace. It may take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour to replace a cabin air filter, depending on its location and the vehicle’s design.
BreatheEasy cabin air filters are available for most newer domestic and import vehicles and come with illustrated vehicle-specific instructions for many makes and models. These instructions are also available on the Purolator website.
Purolator recommends replacing a vehicle’s cabin air filter every 12,000 miles to ensure that you shield yourself and your children from environmental toxins and pollutants … when driving or stuck in traffic even with the windows rolled up.
